Mykonos or any other Greek island for that matter 🙂

Last week, I had the most relaxing time in Mykonos with my aunt, mom and sister. It felt so refreshing to be on a trip where all we could do was laze by the sea and walk around a town full of happy people on holiday.

We basically perfected our tan, swam in the freezing, clear water of the Aegean sea and walked around the cutest and most preserved island town I’ve ever seen.

It was my mom’s decision to take us all to Mykonos this summer. I was a bit against it in the beginning as it’s “too touristic” and I’ve been traveling “un-touristically” for a while now – backpacking in Asia, discovering other sides of European countries, heading to cities during the low season just to discover and not be stuck in a tourist crowd. I admit that the only excitement I had for this trip was the company and practicing my Greek. For me, there was nothing new to experience and the beach, well, I have it everyday in my own country for almost 6 months of the year.

But! To my awesome surprise, it was one of the most refreshing trips I’ve had. Here are 5 reasons why you should fly to Mykonos this summer.

1) The clear (and clean), blue sea and beaches. I had the best time walking on the sandy beaches, tanning and relaxing with a nice frappé in hand.

2) The holiday vibe. Literally EVERYONE in Mykonos is on vacation. If you’re looking for a way to completely disconnect and let the holiday vibe grow on you, it’s the place to be.

3) There is no pressure to see everything. Normally, we head to any destination with a huge list of things to do, eat and see. Well not in Mykonos my friends. There, only one line resides on your to-do: RELAX.

4) Little Venice. It might sound cliché, but Little Venice is my favorite part of the island. We watched the most beautiful sunset there. Knowing we can watch the sunset everyday in Lebanon, this one was amazing because people gather to watch it and then…applaud! It makes you appreciate the beautiful things that we tend to take for granted.

5) The Gyros. But that’s anywhere in Greece 😉

What we ate, where we went and what we saw in Mykonos

Our days were mostly spent at the beach. There are many bays you can go to, but we chose:

  • Ornos – what I loved about Ornos was the mid-day walk Mia and I took around town, where we had the best souvlaki (gyros) ever (apart from Bairaktari’s in Athens but that’s a completely other story).
  • Psarou – we did not go to Namos (the popular restaurant everyone goes to), but kept walking a bit further and found the perfect spot under bamboo shades.
  • Paraga beach – Also a popular spot and not too far from the praised Paradise beach.

In the evening, we took walks around Mykonos Town, watched the sunset and had drinks at one of Little Venice’s bars, and had dinner by the sea away from the center. The old port is also a great place to take a walk around sunset.

Our hotel had the most amazing view so we spent the last night on our balcony taking it all in.

That’s about it! We flew directly from Beirut to Mykonos Airport via Wings Of Lebanon but I’ve tried the ferry from Athens before and it’s a far better experience. So if you have a few more days of vacation, a night or two in Athens and a ferry ride to Mykonos would be the best option.
